INVITATION TO BENEFIT CONCERTS FROM GARY HECKMAN

The group I sing with, Soul Harvest Quartet, is putting on two benefit concerts in less than a month. I NEED YOUR HELP TO GET THE WORD OUT!

The first is at St. Luke's Presbyterian Church at 4301 NE Vivian Rd. in Kansas City . It will be Friday November 21st at 7PM. It will benefit the Harvester's Food Network in Kansas City .

The second is at Wyatt Park Christian Church in St. Joseph . It is Friday December 5th at 7PM. It will benefit the Cold Weather Shelter in St. Joseph .

At each concert we will be taking donations of non-perishable food items as well as personal items like toilet paper, soap and shampoo. We will also take a collection at each concert to help fund additional needs at each beneficiary. We are the church. This is our responsibility. Let's make sure everyone has food to eat and a place to sleep this winter and beyond. Please help me get the word out.

Week of Compassion Updates

New WOC Director Visits South American Partners

While South America is often referred to as the "forgotten" continent, Disciples do have a strong network of partners throughout many South American countries. Week of Compassion regularly responds to disasters and supports sustainable development projects in this region of the world through Church World Service, Action by Churches Together and Global Ministries' Latin America and Caribbean Office. For the next ten days, WOC Associate and recently named Executive Director, Amy Gopp, is visiting a number of church partners and projects in Peru , Bolivia , Argentina and Uruguay with Felix Ortiz of the Global Ministries' LAC Office and Susan Sanders of the United Church of Christ's One Great Hour of Sharing Program. We'll look forward to hearing Amy's reflections on her travels when she returns. In the meanwhile, WOC Director Johnny Wray is in southeast Texas visiting some of the communities and congregations affected by Hurricane Ike. A new Disciples "mission station" is being opened at First Christian Church, Texas City , TX ; it will be the center for Disciples work groups responding to Ike recovery and rebuilding efforts. Volunteer work groups are now being scheduled for the Texas City station and for other stations in Gulfport, MS; Algiers, Slidell, Metairie and Lake Charles, LA; Beaumont/Port Arthur, and Los Fresnos, TX; Greensburg, KS; and Cedar Rapids, IA. For details and scheduling information, contact Anne Marie Moyars in the Office of Disciples Volunteering at amoyars@dhm.disciples.org  (317) 713-2666 or toll free (888) 346-2631. Week of Compassion continues to offer a limited number of work trip grants for hurricane, tornado and flood recovery.

WOC Prepares Responses to Congolese Crisis

As the humanitarian tragedy in eastern Congo continues to worsen, the several members of Action by Churches Together (ACT) in the DRC have carried out a comprehensive assessment and are now preparing a major appeal to provide basic food items, therapeutic feeding for small children, medicines, water, sanitation, shelter, agricultural tools and seeds, basic non-food items, and psychological support for thousands of the displaced. WOC is now garnering resources to respond on behalf of the Disciples. The Disciples Community in Congo is a member of the ACT partner, the Church of Christ in Congo . Most of its congregations are in the western part of the country and have not experienced the fighting directly. However, many of the displaced are making their way into communities where there are Disciples congregations, and WOC also anticipates receiving a request from Global Ministries' Africa Office to support the efforts of Congolese Disciples to assist some of the victims, especially traumatized and abused women.

Click below for the complete listing of this week's responses. For a complimentary copy of the map/poster for your congregation, call the office at 317.713.2442 or send an e-mail to ecleveland@woc.disciples.org .
