HELP NEEDED:
To get power to the barn at the Lifelong
Learning center we have had to make an unexpected adjustment to
our game plan. If someone in your congregation has a machine to
dig a ditch for a power line, would you please contact the area
office 816-632-2237 or
nwareacc AT nwareacc.org?
We are trying to accomplish this next week as preparations for
the September 6 celebration are in full swing.
*****
Another need for the Lifelong Learning Center
is two refrigerators. These do not have to be new as long as
they are in good working condition. If you can help with this
please notify the office. It would be helpful to have them
before the September 6 celebration.
*****
If anyone has a twin size mattress we have a
family in the St. Joseph area that has 3 little boys who are
trying to share one bed. They have the frame work for a twin
size bed, but need a mattress. Please contact the area office
(816)632-2237 or Sandi Mull at 660-582-4699
*****
One of the projects for the September 6 Hog
Roast and celebration will be to make concrete stepping stones
for the memorial garden. If you have any mementos (symbols) to
put in the concrete please bring them. (Bring coveralls or other
work clothing if you plan to help making making the concrete
forms). There are many activities planned for everyone of all
ages. Please make this day a priority for your family and

Week of Compassion Update
Health Initiative Launched in South Sudan
IMA World Health, a key Disciples ecumenical
partner, has recently launched a major health initiative in
South Sudan . The program will provide basic health services to
an estimated 1.8-2.5 million people in the South Sudan states of
Jonglei and Upper Nile , and rebuild and strengthen a
decentralized country health system that has been decimated by
decades of war.
Week of Compassion is a strong supporter of
IMA World Health and has recently funded other IMA initiatives
in Haiti , Tanzania and Congo . Many Disciples congregations
have participated in the IMA/WOC Medicine Box program, including
the current campaign to provide medicine boxes to six hospitals
of the Disciples community in the Congo . IMA World Health has
consistently received 4 star ratings (the highest given) by
Charity Navigator for both efficiency and capacity.
One Volunteer's Thoughts
With the first phase of the Disciples
Hurricane Recovery Initiative ending August 31 and the second
phase beginning the following day, September 1, the following
blog entry from Courtney Richards, Minister of Congregational
Growth at Geist Christian Church, Indianapolis , IN , is
especially timely:
"For all that's been said and done, there is
more under every story than you can possibly imagine. And for
all that's been recovered and rebuilt in the three years (yes,
three years!) since Katrina and Rita slammed the Gulf Coast
states, it's still unfathomable how far we've yet to go. It is
an honor to serve in a church that says, 'we're here as long as
you need us.' To those along the Gulf, to those in the Midwest ,
those anywhere - 'we are with you in this.' Stop by to catch the
stories and pictures of all that's going on, and all that's yet
to be done. Better yet, pack a bag and get in the van; there's
always more to do and always plenty of room for people who will
do it."

Grace Church Celebrates
And speaking of the Disciples Hurricane
Recovery Initiative, Week of Compassion extends best wishes and
deepest thanks to Grace Disciples Church in Covington, LA, as
they celebrate their closing as a Disciples Mission Station
after almost 3 years of service to hurricane-affected families
along the North Shore of the metropolitan New Orleans area.
Hundreds of Disciples volunteers have made Grace their home
during work trips to the region and enjoyed the warm hospitality
of Grace's members. Scores of congregations that have sent work
teams to the Gulf South now have a "shard cross" prominently
displayed as a reminder of both Katrina's destruction and the
reconciling hope of the gospel. Josh Baird is the site manager
and Laura Fitt-Baird is the pastor.
Disciples Mission Stations remain in operation
at Gulfport, MS; Algiers, LA; Slidell, LA; Lake Charles, LA;
Beaumont/Port Arthur, TX; Los Fresnos, TX; Greensburg, KS; and
Cedar Rapids, IA - and volunteers are needed! Call the Office of
Disciples Volunteering at 888.346.2631, or visit the website
