PRAYER CONCERNS:
Rodney Hopper, pastor of the Rock Port
Christian Church had triple by-pass surgery in Lincoln Thursday,
7/31/08. Rodney is at Bryan Lincoln General Hospital (East) 40th
and Sumner, Lincoln , Nebraska . He is recovering nicely and no
complications. Thanks to the Rock Port church for their loving
care and concern for Rodney and Elaine. Also thanks to Adam
Magill, Pastor at Fairfax Christian church who is helping
provide pastoral care while Rodney recuperates. Please keep all
of these people in your prayers.
Because of the generous donations from several
individuals and churches that have given above their normal
giving we have been able to meet all of the payroll and the
statements that were due. We are still behind paying some of the
budgeted items i.e. medical reimbursements, copier fund etc. We
give thanks for the thoughts and prayers and ask that you
continue to pray for the Area Office and the many ministries. We
can see the hand of God at work in so many ways and know that
through Him and with your continued support we can accomplish
great things.

Mark your calendars for
A Call to Care: Ministry Among Persons with
Mental Illness
Thursday, October 23, 2008 9:00 a.m. to 3:30
p.m.
Rockbridge Christian Church, Columbia
Event Cost: $65 includes lunch
This event will explore the call of ministers,
church members, caregivers, chaplains, and pastoral counselors
to ministry among persons with mental illness. Laity and clergy
are invited to attend.
Dr. Rennebohm’s morning keynote, “The
Beloved Stranger: Mental Illness, Spiritual Care and Recovery,”
will focus on the role of religious professionals—clergy,
spiritual care providers, pastoral counselors and chaplains—in
responding to the faith questions, concerns and needs of persons
facing mental illness and their families. There will be time for
questions and answers.
The afternoon session, “The Way of
Companionship: Growing the Congregation as a Healing Community,”
will focus on increasing the capacity of the local church for
mental health ministry. Among other challenges, congregations
are called to minister to the needs of veterans returning with
post-traumatic stress disorder, aging baby-boomers and their
geriatric mental health needs, persons with depression and brain
injuries, and young adults facing the onset of mental illness.
Featured Speaker: Craig Rennebohm, M.Div.
graduated from Carleton College in 1966 and Chicago
Theological Seminary in 1970. He was ordained in the United
Church of Christ and served in the parish ministry for sixteen
years, eleven of them in Seattle . In 1986, Craig entered the
Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley , California , where he
concentrated on pastoral care and received the Doctor of
Ministry degree. He returned to Seattle in 1987 and founded the
Mental Health Chaplaincy.
Under Craig's leadership, the Chaplaincy has
grown to serve families, create mental health ministries in
local congregations, and advocate for an effective and readily
accessible community mental health system. Craig has taught and
presented in a variety of local, national, and international
settings, and served for ten years with an international,
interfaith working group on Spirituality and Social Work active
during and after hostilities in Croatia and Bosnia-Hercegovina.
He has received numerous recognitions for his
Chaplaincy work, including the Tipper Gore Award of the National
Health Care for the Homeless Council, a Carleton College Alumni
Distinguished Achievement Award, and a Seattle
Post-Intelligencer Jefferson Award.
Craig's long-awaited book,
Souls in the Hands of a Tender
God,
written with David Paul, was published by
Beacon Press
in May of 2008. The book tells uplifting stories of Chaplaincy
experiences. It's a book for a wide audience that introduces the
public to the real world of people with mental illness, explores
what we can all do to help those in distress, and challenges us
to create caring communities.

Week of Compassion Update
Hurricane Dolly Sweeps into Texas and Mexico
Hurricane Dolly slammed into the south
Texas/north Mexico coast Wednesday afternoon and evening with
Category 2 winds of 100 mph and very heavy rainfall. Preliminary
damage assessments are underway, and Week of Compassion is
making contact with Disciples congregations in the Bluebonnet
Area of the Christian Church in the Southwest and with Church
World Service and its related partners in preparation of a
comprehensive response to the storm.
WOC has been in touch with long-time Disciples
partner, Southwest Good Samaritan Ministries. Staff report wind
and water damage to SWGSM facilities in Bayview and Los Fresnos
, TX . WOC has wired an emergency grant of $6000 to assist with
repairs and support relief efforts of SWGSM in the Lower Rio
Grande Valley .
Scores of Disciples work groups have been
participating in the SWGSM/WOC "La Casita" project - a special
initiative to build small, decent homes for impoverished Mexican
families in nearby Matamoros , Mexico . Details of the impact of
Dolly on the project will be posted soon.
You can help WOC respond to Hurricane Dolly.
Designated gifts will no doubt be needed to support relief and
recovery efforts of Southwest Good Samaritan Ministries and
support an expected Church World Service appeal. CWS also has an
urgent request out right now for cleanup buckets, baby kits and
school kits. Click below for details.

Goal Met, but the Crisis Continues in Darfur
In 2008 Week of Compassion set a goal of
$100,000 to respond to the ongoing tragedy in Darfur , Sudan ,
and support the major relief response of Action by Churches
Together (ACT) to this humanitarian nightmare. Because of the
outstanding support of several congregations that held special
Darfur benefit events and the hundreds of contributions of
Disciples members and friends, WOC is pleased to report that
goal has been met and exceeded.
Unfortunately, the crisis there continues, and
the human suffering remains unimaginable to many of us. ACT
staff continue to serve faithfully and courageously under
difficult and dangerous circumstances. Click below for the
latest story/update on Darfur from ACT.
