Thank you!
We want to thank the churches and individuals
for their enthusiastic responses to the Courier which was sent
out last week. We hope that this will be a useful tool for all
churches to feel more connected and have a better understanding
of the ministries of the Northwest Area.

One week left - there is still time to get
your church involved.
Join Soles4Souls in their National Barefoot
Sunday Campaign on June 1st to help the over 300 million
children around the world living barefoot. If you have already
signed up for this great program, Thank You for your support. If
not keep reading to see how you too can partner with
Soles4Souls.
Barefoot Sunday is a great opportunity to
encourage congregations like yours to take off their shoes and
walk out of services, barefoot. Your organization's leadership
would invite members to leave their shoes on the altar in order
to demonstrate God's love to hurting people across the world
with the simple gift of shoes.
The process is simple; however the message
from the service will have lasting effects. Please follow these
5 Easy Steps:
1. Contact a Soles4Souls representative at
sunday@giveshoes.org
to register your event.
2. After receiving your church information,
our representative will send collection and marketing materials
for your event.
3. We encourage you to advertise in your
bulletin or newsletter for 3 weeks prior to Barefoot Sunday on
June 1st. That way everyone can clean out their closets!
4. On Barefoot Sunday, ask everyone to leave
church without their shoes.
5. Box the shoes and ship them to the closest
warehouse!
This touching event will not only leave a mark
on the hearts of the entire congregation, but it also helps
Soles4Souls continue their mission of "Changing the World One
Pair at a Time.™"

Life Long Learning Center Update
An Oversight Team is being formed to help with
the first year of planning, dreaming and organizing for the
Pulliam Farm. A Property and Management Team is starting the
work of getting the house ready for Ken and Sue Jameson to move
into and other maintenance work so that the barn can be usable
for the September 6 Area Board Meeting, celebration and
dedication of the Life Long Learning Center. There will be a
whole hog roast at the Area Board meeting so make plans to
attend. Other teams will be formed and active before the end of
June. Please be in prayer that God’s will prevails in all
aspects of creating the camp and conference facilities.
For those of you who like to volunteer, we
will have remodeling times set in June and will create groups of
no more than 4-6 people at a time. Old carpet needs to be
removed, the basement needs to be cleared, patching of cracks
and painting need to be done in the near future. Windows will
need to be replaced and the breezeway will need a new floor,
insulation, new doors and windows to make an office for the
camp. The barn is being evaluated and it will need scraping,
painting and most likely a concrete floor, as well as cleaning.
An initial list of improvements and costs will
be publicized in a few weeks. If you would like to volunteer for
any of the above jobs, please contact the Area Office.

Wyatt Park Christian Church Welcomes Hispanic
Ministry
Good Afternoon,
I wanted to give you an update on the plans for a new Hispanic
Disciples congregation in St. Joseph . The group wanting to
start the congregation concluded that our facility here at Wyatt
Park would best meet their needs, and I let them know that the
Board vote Monday night was unanimous - that we welcome them to
worship here.
They will plan to use the big room in the basement for worship,
and will probably also want to use a classroom or two for
children and adult classes. Their hope is to begin worshiping
sometime in June.
The couple that will serve as pastors are David and Jazzel
Ramirez and you will find their e-mail address above. They and
their children will be moving from their home in Dallas , Texas
to St. Joseph to begin their ministry. David will also be
seeking employment here so that they have an income while they
serve the new congregation. They will continue working with
Pastor Francisco Hernandez (whose e-mail is also above) from
Enid , Oklahoma . He has several years experience starting a new
Hispanic congregation and he will be guiding them - and us -
through this process.
I am very excited about the opportunity this gives us to partner
with our Hispanic neighbors as we continually seek to live out
our Vision Statement: "Reach out through Jesus Christ to bring
people to spiritually abundant life and eternal salvation." I
ask you to be in prayer for the Ramirez family as they prepare
to move to St. Joseph, for us as a congregation as we open our
facility and our hearts to these brothers and sisters in Christ,
and for the people of St. Joseph - regardless of nationality
- that they will come to know the love and saving goodness of
Jesus Christ.
In His Name,
Scott Killgore

Week of Compassion Update
Church Relief Operations Continue in Myanmar
and China
It has now been more than two weeks since
Cyclone Nargis swamped the Irrawaddy delta region of Myanmar (
Burma ) and more than one week since a 7.9 earthquake devastated
the Sichuan province of western China - two of the worst
disasters to strike southern Asia since the December 2004
tsunami. The death toll in Myanmar is now estimated to be more
than 130,000 people, and there are fears it may exceed 200,000.
As many as 2.5 million people have been affected and are in
urgent need of assistance. In China the death toll is
approaching 80,000, and some 5 million people have been made
homeless.
In spite of the actions and attitude of the
Myanmar regime, Week of Compassion is able to support relief
efforts in the country through a network of local organizations
within Church World Service and Action by Churches Together.
(See WOC Update 5/15/08 for a brief slide presentation of relief
activities being carried out in Myanmar .) Also, the Southern
Asia Office of Global Ministries has church partnerships in the
country through whom WOC is also responding. (See the link
below, "Cry Tears for Burma ," for a personal word from one of
those partners.) In China , long-time Disciples, CWS and ACT
partner, the Amity Foundation, is fully engaged in quake relief
activities and is providing emergency food, temporary shelter
and water to more than 8000 of the most vulnerable families.
Cry Tears for Burma
WOC Responds with Emergency Grants
WOC has already provided $35,000 in emergency
grants in response to the cyclone and $17,000 in response to the
quake. Next week, the WOC Committee is meeting in Los Fresnos ,
TX , and will consider additional responses to the two large
appeals that have been issued by CWS to its member communions.
Online and regular mail donations have been very encouraging and
are enabling WOC to ensure that the response of the Disciples to
both these disasters is strong. Designated gifts can be made
online by clicking on the link below, or sent to WOC, attn:
Elaine Cleveland, P.O. Box 1986 , Indpls , IN 46206 . All gifts
are used in their entirety as directed by the donor. Thank you.
