SOLES4SOULS
Join Soles4Souls in their National Barefoot Sunday
Campaign on June 1st to help the over 300 million
children around the world living barefoot.
Barefoot Sunday is a great opportunity to encourage
congregations like yours to take off their shoes and
walk out of services, barefoot. Your organization's
leadership would invite members to leave their shoes
on the altar in order to demonstrate God's love to
hurting people across the world with the simple gift
of shoes.
The process is simple; however the message from the
service will have lasting effects. Please follow
these 5 Easy Steps:
1.
Contact a Soles4Souls representative at
sunday@giveshoes.org to register your
event.
2.
After receiving your church information, our
representative will send collection and marketing
materials for your event.
3.
We encourage you to advertise in your
bulletin or newsletter for 3 weeks prior to Barefoot
Sunday on June 1st. That way everyone can clean out
their closets!
4.
On Barefoot Sunday, ask everyone to leave
church without their shoes.
5.
Box the shoes and ship them to the closest
warehouse!
This touching event will not only leave a mark on
the hearts of the entire congregation, but it also
helps Soles4Souls continue their mission of
"Changing the World One Pair at a Time.™"
Thank you
Wayne Elsey
Founder of Soles4Souls

Wyatt
Park Christian Church Welcomes Hispanic Ministry
Good Afternoon,
I wanted to give you an update on the plans for a
new Hispanic Disciples congregation in St. Joseph .
The group wanting to start the congregation
concluded that our facility here at Wyatt Park would
best meet their needs, and I let them know that the
Board vote Monday night was unanimous - that we
welcome them to worship here.
They will plan to use the big room in the basement
for worship, and will probably also want to use a
classroom or two for children and adult classes.
Their hope is to begin worshiping sometime in June.
The couple that will serve as pastors are David and
Jazzel Ramirez and you will find their e-mail
address above. They and their children will be
moving from their home in Dallas , Texas to St.
Joseph to begin their ministry. David will also be
seeking employment here so that they have an income
while they serve the new congregation. They will
continue working with Pastor Francisco Hernandez
(whose e-mail is also above) from Enid , Oklahoma .
He has several years experience starting a new
Hispanic congregation and he will be guiding them -
and us - through this process.
I am very
excited about the opportunity this gives us to
partner with our Hispanic neighbors as we
continually seek to live out our Vision Statement:
"Reach out through Jesus Christ to bring people to
spiritually abundant life and eternal salvation." I
ask you to be in prayer for the Ramirez family as
they prepare to move to St. Joseph, for us as a
congregation as we open our facility and our hearts
to these brothers and sisters in Christ, and for the
people of St. Joseph - regardless of nationality
- that they will come to know the love and saving
goodness of Jesus Christ.
In His Name,
Scott

Week of Compassion Update
Darfur
Conflict Worsens

A new report to the U.N.
Security Council describes a worsening conflict in
Darfur and an ever-growing number of people
seriously impacted by the fighting. Of Darfur's
estimated population of six million people, now more
than 4.25 million have been affected and are
dependent upon international assistance for
survival. More than 2.7 million have been displaced
elsewhere in Sudan and in nearby countries. Some
officials now estimate the death toll may be close
to 400,000. With the peace process deadlocked and
the joint peace-keeping force, known as UNAMID,
lacking critical capabilities and not yet fully
operational, there is little hope in the near future
for a reversal of the situation on the ground.
Indeed, the deteriorating security situation and the
growing global food crisis is forcing the World Food
Program to cut its food rations to Darfur in half
next month.
In the midst of this
nightmarish scenario, the Darfur Emergency Response
Operation (DERO) of Action by Churches Together and
Caritas International continues to provide water,
sanitation, health, nutrition, education,
psycho-social care, protection, agricultural
services, and basic emergency assistance to hundreds
of thousands of the Darfuri displaced. Again this
year, Week of Compassion has pledged at least
$100,000 on behalf of North American Disciples to
support the '08 ACT Darfur appeal of USD$13.6
million.
Disciples Respond
Creatively to
Darfur
Crisis

Disciples congregations,
members and friends continue to respond generously -
and creatively - to the crisis in Darfur . Saturday,
WOC Director Johnny Wray will join scores of St.
Louis Disciples at Memorial Blvd. Christian Church's
34th Annual 20K Hunger Hike. This year's goal is to
raise $20,000 for Darfur . Later in May, Country
Club Christian Church, Kansas City , MO , is hosting
a Darfur benefit jazz concert with world renowned
jazz pianist, Eldar, and LifeWind Christian Church,
a new church start in the Lake St. Louis , MO area,
has planned a Darfur benefit gospel concert. And
more and more Disciples congregations are joining
the "Tents of Hope" campaign.

Global
Food Crisis Becoming a Silent Tsunami

According to Josette
Sheeran, the Executive Director of the World Food
Program, the looming global food crisis is becoming
a "silent tsunami" of hunger that is engulfing the
world's most vulnerable nations. According to the
WFP, at least 20 million children have already been
put at risk, and Robert Zoellick, President of the
World Bank, says that as many as 100 million people
could be forced into even deeper poverty. With the
price of such basic food staples as rice having
doubled in the past five weeks - the World Bank
estimates that food prices have risen nearly 85% in
the past 3 years - even the modest gains that have
been made in combating hunger will likely be erased.
Perhaps, however, the
most telling comments of the impact of the crisis
come from church partners on the ground. BJ Mpofu of
the Associated Churches of Christ in Zimbabwe is now
in South Africa trying to purchase maize for his
rural congregations to distribute to people in their
communities. "I must admit I was shocked at the lack
of food and the seriousness of the situation. The
demand for food is frightening."
Church World Service has
prepared a "fact sheet" on the crisis to help the
members of its member communions be more informed
and aware. Week of Compassion has established a
"world food crisis" account to help Disciples
respond to emergency food requests from our church
partners, as well as provide assistance for long
term development projects that enable people to
reach a modicum of food security. You can view the
CWS fact sheet online at
www.weekofcompassion.org and/or make an
online contribution by clicking on the link below.
Also, the crisis is
having an impact on domestic food prices, and WOC
anticipates an increased number of requests from our
own congregations that work with food banks and
hunger programs in their respective communities.

Tornadoes Strike Southern Virginia

Week of Compassion is in
contact with numerous congregations in southern
Virginia in the aftermath of Monday's tornadoes. At
least three tornadoes touched down along the James
River from Colonial Heights (south of Richmond ) to
Suffolk . At least two hundred people were treated
for injuries, but no deaths have been reported. WOC
is working with local pastors to respond to any
impacted members as well as needs in the surrounding
communities.
