LATHROP
FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH PIE CONTEST
Pies! Those glorious,
scrumptious, delicious, beautiful, delectable
Americana desserts! Lathrop will experience their
First Annual Pie Fest on April 26 at the Lathrop
Community Center sponsored by the First Christian
Church beginning at 6:00 pm. The fun is just
beginning as a silent auction has commenced for four
of the coveted pie judging positions and will end at
12:15, April 20 at the church. ANYONE can bid on
those once-in-a-pietime positions...just drop by the
church or call the office at 528-3868 and leave your
bid this week!
The judging teams will
be anchored by a pastry expert and winners of the
silent auction. There are many opportunities for
everyone to participate and hopefully win a prize.
The pie categories are: Fruit, Custard,
Meringue/Cream, Meat, and Cheesecake. Also, there
are four age divisions--Youth (16 & under), Adult
(17-59), Novice (beginner), and Senior (over 60
yrs).
The public may sample
pies for a small donation and vote for the people's
choice awards. Pies to be judged will need to be
at the Community Center by 5:30.
Entertainment by our local youth and
the Lathrop Musical Mules under the direction of
Sandra Eggleston will begin at 6:30.
If there are any youth
wishing to participate, please either contact
Sandra, Debbie or Pam.
By far the most fun
may be the pie eating contest at 7:30. Rumor has it
that it might be a contest between the school
principals...who knows! Each contestant can be
sponsored for a donation. There will be a limit of
12 in the pie eating contest so register early!
The American Pie
Council has an annual pie festival in Florida ...but
we think we are the first in Missouri ! Let's
discover how many great cooks we have in our
community! Come out for a great evening of fun and
great food!

Week
of Compassion Update
Growing Food Crisis
Sparks Concern Among
Disciples

Week
of Compassion has begun receiving a number of calls
and emails about the growing food crisis in the
world and what WOC is doing in response. Indeed, a
number of international organizations, including
numerous humanitarian agencies, have issued warnings
about the rising prices of food and the impact on
the world's poor. The World Bank has said that food
prices have risen more than 80 percent over the past
three years. Violent protests have already erupted
in a dozen countries, and scores more face serious
food shortages this year.
High oil prices, bad
weather, food grains (especially corn) diverted to
bio-fuel production, globalization of markets,
further devaluation of the U.S. dollar and other
forces are combining to form a "perfect storm" to
put millions of lives of the world's poorest people
at risk.
WOC has received a number
of alerts from church partners on the ground who are
already responding to the crisis in their respective
countries, as well as developing additional response
plans. Also, WOC is in touch with Church World
Service (CWS) and other ecumenical partners about
developing a resource with the most up-to-date
information available and how, together, we might
make the most appropriate, coordinated response. In
the meantime, WOC is setting up a new designated
account, "world food crisis," that will enable
interested Disciples to respond. Contributions can
be made online by clicking on the link below or sent
to Week of Compassion, attn: Elaine Cleveland, P.O.
Box 1986 , Indianapolis , IN 46206 .

WOC
Responds to Wildfires in
Colorado

Wildfires on the eastern plains of Colorado forced
the evacuation of the town of Ordway (some 1200
residents). Two households in the First Christian
Church family lost their homes. Week of Compassion
has responded with an emergency grant to assist
those two families and is working with FCC about
additional responses the congregation will support
in the larger community. Stan Hamamoto will begin a
new pastorate with the congregation next week.
