Help Needed
The area office needs shelving to help organize the many
resources that we are building up. We have had plastic shelving
but the shelves are beginning to bow and are in danger of
breaking. If you know of any shelves that are no longer being
used that could be donated, or at a very reasonable price,
please contact the office (816)632-2237 or
nwareacc@nwareacc.org. We greatly appreciate any help you can
offer.

Invitation from Conception Abbey
Each year, during the third week in January, the monks of
Conception Abbey pray for Christian unity, and a special worship
service is held as part of that week of prayer. This year's
service will be on Thursday evening, January 24th, at 7:00PM at
the abbey. Abbot Gregory Polan is inviting pastors from
throughout the area to come to the service and join in the
procession. An Episcopal priest will bring the sermon this year
(Scott Killgore preached at that service 4 years ago). If you
normally wear a robe, you are encouraged to bring it.
Participating pastors will process in together and be seated up
front throughout the service. The service lasts about an hour
and then there will be a time of refreshments and fellowship
afterward for those who want to stay and visit.
If you would like to participate, plan to arrive at
Conception Abbey by 6:50PM. If you are able to attend, please
e-mail Abbot Gregory at gregory@conception.edu and let him know.

From: Office of Disciples Volunteering & UCC Office of
Volunteer Ministries
Subject: Summer Internships
The Office of Disciples Volunteering and the United Church of
Christ Office of Volunteer Ministries invite your students to
consider applying for summer volunteer/internship opportunities.
The Disciples Home Mission Intern program and the UCC Volunteer
Ministries “Partners in Service” program offer opportunities for
service in a variety of ministry settings throughout the United
States . These settings offer students exposure to front burner
cross-cultural issues, experience in working with diverse groups
of people, and the opportunity to serve through the church. The
enclosed flyer highlights these placement possibilities.
As a joint program, we would especially highlight the
opportunity for internships in the F.A.S.T. program (Faithful
Advocates Serving Together). This is a ten week internship in
the Appalachian region around Alderson , WV providing leadership
for groups as they accompany members of the Alderson Ministerial
Association working with housing issues in the region. Interns
help groups reflect on issues of economic justice in light of
the work they are doing with their hands and the people they
meet during the week. The on-site supervisor provides the
opportunity for your school to consider this as a field
education placement.
Applications for Disciples Home Mission Interns are available
at:
http://www.discipleshomemissions.org/Volunteer/SpecialProjects/Interns.htm
Deadline: April 1, 2008
Applications for UCC Volunteer Ministries Summer
Opportunities are available at

"Getting Dirty for Jesus" will transform your congregation.
Call us, let's talk!

Chalice Press Author to Direct Research in Effective
Congregational Transformation
.
The purposes of the UNBINDING THE GOSPEL PROJECT phase
are
* to provide coaching that will support 1000+ congregations
to use the Real Life Evangelism Series (Unbinding the Gospel,
Unbinding Your Church, and Unbinding Your Heart) in the most
systematic and effective way possible, and
* to encourage pastors and lay leaders in 1000 congregations
to work together as "field researchers," in "Communities of
inquiry," to help discover the dynamics of church
transformation.
Reese is enthusiastic about what is happening in
congregations:
"Since Unbinding the Gospel was published a year ago, we have
heard amazing stories from the congregations that are using it.
Typical mainline churches - Presbyterian, UCC, Disciples,
Methodist - are seeing true transformation, in lives and in
their congregations. We are grateful that this new grant from
Lilly Endowment will allow us to help creative lay people and
pastors think through, talk through, pray through issues of
faith deepening, faith sharing and congregational
transformation."
"The most important point of the WWW.GRACENET.INFO.
In Unbinding the Gospel, Reese presents a clear-spoken,
hopeful vision for a future and gives us a way to get
there-without gimmicky formulas, but hand-in-hand with God.
Based on a four-year project researching superb mainline
evangelism, Reese interviewed more than 1,200 people in some of
the most successful evangelistic congregations in the country.
The book, released January 2007, became a surprise, national
top-seller that is now in its fifth printing. THE ALBAN
INSTITUTE named it as a 2007 "Top Pick." Brian McLaren, George
Hunter, Todd Hunter (Alpha, North America ), eight heads of
denominations enthusiastically endorse the book.
Reese has authored two additional resources, released January
2008, that expand and intensify the effect of Unbinding the
Gospel so that its impact will saturate the entire congregation:
· UNBINDING YOUR HEART will enrich the congregation's
community
life and help individuals risk face-to-face encounters with
God.
· Unbinding Your Church (Pastor's Guide to the Real Life
Evangelism Series): Includes chapters for leading groups,
establishing intercessory prayer groups, and organizing both
leaders'
studies and the six-week, all church study of Unbinding Your
Heart.
Sample sermons, worship resources, and full music plans by
four musicians, and step-by-step planning tools and worship
resources to support pastors. The planning tools include
calendars, checklists for church staff and organizers, scripture
exegesis, church newsletter samples, diagrams, simple to
elaborate E-vent planning suggestions, Web site ideas, specific
lesson plans, and more. Sermons, prayers, and organizational
forms have been placed on the Web for FREE and easy access and
downloads.
Through February 27, 2008, Chalice Press is offering a
special 35% discount to customers that order any of the Real
Life Evangelism Series titles. Customers can take advantage of
the sale by giving the special promotion code RLE2008 when
placing an order. To order books in the WWW.CHALICEPRESS.COM.

Week of Compassion Update
2007 Response Fund Report
A few months ago, the WOC Update featured a study by the UK
charity, Oxfam, reporting that the number of weather-related
natural disasters had quadrupled over a twenty-year period from
1985 to 2004. Now the German-based organization, Munich Re, is
reporting that there were 950 natural disasters recorded in 2007
- the most since it began keeping records in 1974. Here at Week
of Compassion, we see the number of requests and appeals coming
from our partners across North America and through the world
continue to rise each year. WOC is deeply grateful to our many
Disciples congregations, members and friends who continue to
provide the resources that enable us to respond to so much human
need in the world.
Within the WOC program it is the Compassion Response Fund
(and related special designated accounts), that enables us to
respond promptly to emergencies, disasters and other urgent
humanitarian requests as they arise. Below is a brief summary of
responses we have made through December 31, 2007, from the
Response Fund and certain designated disaster accounts. This is,
of course, only a snapshot and does not include other resources
we are providing for long-term sustainable development projects.
But we do hope it will offer an overview of the many emergency
needs to which we Disciples are responding. In 2007, WOC
provided $1,277,287 in relief and recovery grants to 276
requests/situations for an average of once every 1.3 days!
More than 800 Disciples congregations have now requested the
WOC interactive map/poster to track emergency and long-term
development responses on a weekly basis. It is a good visual
tool for Disciples to see how our gifts are used around the
world, around the year. A complete list of those responses for
2007 (plus those we made since January 1, 2008) is on the WOC
website. For a complimentary map/poster, contact Elaine at
317.713.2442 or email her at ecleveland@woc.disciples.org.
